Over 600 guests packed Gadsden State Community College’s Beck Auditorium this past Friday and Saturday for the High School Basketball Classic—turning the two-day showcase into a slam dunk for both community spirit and local economic impact. Among the notable attendees were Midfield Mayor Terry Adams, Etowah County Commissioner Jeffery Washington, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney, and parents, students, fans from across Alabama and Georgia and of course several college scouts. The event even grabbed the attention of Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford, who posted on Facebook: “Let’s go TITANS! Throwback Litchfield uniforms tonight. LOVE IT!”

Home Court Highlights

The weekend delivered a full slate of competitive matchups and standout performances. On Friday night, Midfield’s girls opened with a strong 56–39 win over Gadsden City, while the Titans answered later that evening with a 70–55 victory over Midfield in the boys’ matchup. Earlier in the day, Cornerstone faced Jefferson Christian Academy, although no official score has been reported for that opener.

Saturday’s action continued with Oneonta defeating Jefferson Christian Academy 56–39, followed by the anticipated Etowah vs. Cornerstone showdown. The Classic wrapped up with a commanding performance from Gadsden City’s boys’ team, who rolled past Coosa High School (GA) 86–36 in the finale.

As the home team, Gadsden City High School drew major attention, led by UAB Blazers signee Jakobi Sharp (22), whose athleticism and leadership brought the crowd to its feet. The Titans’ energy, depth, and hometown pride set the tone from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

Building Economic Momentum

The games weren’t the only source of excitement—the Classic produced a meaningful economic ripple effect for Gadsden and Etowah County. Families and fans traveling from Birmingham, Midfield, Georgia, and across the region supported nearby restaurants, gas stations and retail shops.

With over 600 total attendees, the event injected both vibrancy and revenue into the city. For many visitors, it was their first time on campus—an intangible but powerful boost for community visibility and college awareness.

Campus Engagement & Future Impact

The Classic also served as a soft recruiting moment for Gadsden State. With high school athletes stepping inside a college venue, parents touring the grounds, and students engaging with the campus environment, the event quietly supported future enrollment and strengthened Gadsden State’s position as a regional hub for athletics and education.

Thanks to the Team

Special recognition goes to Coach D. Tarver, whose leadership brought the Classic to life with support from campus administration and sponsored support from Etowah County Commissioner Jeffery Washington. The room was also filled with a dedicated team of volunteers and community partners.

Beyond hosting an exciting sports weekend, Coach Tarver gave his players something deeper: a hands-on lesson in leadership and responsibility. Players worked concessions, staffed the entry doors, assisted with the scoreboard, and supported game-day logistics—gaining real-world experience in teamwork, operations, and professionalism.
